Saturday, September 18, 2010 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free
Rainbow Beach, 3111 East 77th Street, Chicago

Bring the family to Rainbow Beach, one of Chicago’s most beautiful lakefront parks, for a day of peaceful fun. In the morning, young and old alike can participate in the moving Call to Peace and World Peace Flag Ceremony, and then be inspired by the words of some of the community’s hardworking peacemakers.

Early afternoon, participate in free workshops ranging from kids art projects to mainstreaming a culture of peace, to safe and humane dog handling to peace dancing and much more. At 2 p.m., children can hold up the hand-held doves they created in one of the workshops as everyone gathers for a peace parade around the park, led by a Giant Peace Dove Puppet! A closing ceremony will bring us all back to peace.

This event is sponsored by the Jane Goodall Institute–Illinois and its Roots & Shoots youth organization. Click here for more information about the Roots & Shoots program. For information on Rainbow Beach and Park, please visit the Chicago Park District’s website.

September 21, 2010 is the United Nations (U.N.) International Day of Peace. That day, all Chicago Public Schools are being asked to participate in the citywide celebration of Peace Day (see letter above). This is an important step toward building a Culture of Peace in Chicago. This year we are drawing inspiration from the work of Dr. Jane Goodall, U.N. Messenger of Peace and Honorary Co-Chair of our committee. Dr. Goodall advocates peace for animals, peace for people and peace for the environment.

Click below for 5 suggested activities for your school:

Or, create your own Peace Day activity! Peace-themed music, art, poetry, dance, drama, sports, games, clean-up projects, environmental programs…the possibilities are endless. Get more ideas from the photo gallery below, or click here: UN Youth Activities 2010 for ideas from the United Nations. All schools that engage in a Peace Day activity are asked to send a brief summary and photos to: info@buildthepeace.org.
