The 35th Anniversary of Peace Day in Chicago was held in Daley Plaza on September 20, 2013 with the Call to Peace and World Peace Flag Ceremony, speakers, cultural performances and live world music.
The 2013 celebration featured the World Peace Flag Ceremony, a colorful procession of the world’s flags carried by members of the Chicago Consular Corps, representatives of ethnic and cultural institutions, students and volunteers. WBEZ was a media sponsor of this event. Voices filled Daley Plaza as everyone joined in sending wishes, thoughts or prayers for peace to each country of the world.
Remarks were given by some of Chicago’s prominent peace builders including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Commissioner Mona Noriega of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett, Director Rocco Claps of the Illinois Department of Human Rights and more.
Cultural performances of music and dance rounded out the celebration. More than 50 representatives from the Chicago Consular Corps gathered on stage to lead the audience in One Minute of Silence for World Peace.
